 In a heavy atom the electrons can be regarded as a kind of atmosphere surroun­ding the nucleus, which exists in a state of complete degeneracy. One can cal­culate approximately the distribution of electrons around the nucleus by means of a statistical analysis; this is applied to the theory of the formation of shells of electrons in the atom. The agreement with experiment is satisfactory.
